Like most great things in existence, Sportsman's Comfort Products (now known as HuntingComfort.com) was born out of necessity. Back in the late 1980s, two long-time friends and short-time hunting partners started discussing an idea to make hunting more comfortable, functional and really, in some cases, more tolerable. As Orthopedic Physical Therapists specialized in spine care, John Holden, PT and Brent Barker, PT had been using a product known as a Lumbar Roll to treat neck and back pain patients for several years. They had also been using them as a way to prevent neck and back pain or problems for themselves in their trucks, cars, chairs, and most importantly in their deer stands. After determining over many hunts that they could enjoy being on stand 2-3 hours longer with a lumbar roll as compared to without one, their suspicion became a certainty. They knew it was something that they had to introduce to their hunting friends and, ultimately, to the world.

In 1995, the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) was having its annual Convention and Sports EXPO in Nashville, TN, which is home to Sportsman's Comfort Products (SCP). John and Brent heard the advertisements for the EXPO touting an audience/ attendance of 40,000 turkey and deer hunting enthusiasts and thought it would be a great place to introduce this new idea to the country.

The rest, as they say, is history! Backmate is the name they decided on for their premier product. They started preparing for that show by scrambling to find suppliers for the components to their first product and people to sew them, and putting together a booth to display the 1000 Backmates that were created for that first showing. They just knew with their backgrounds and knowledge and passion for both health and hunting that they could easily sell a Backmate to one out of four attendees. “To our great surprise, introducing something to protect your spine to a crowd thinking about turkey hunting was not as simple as we had imagined", said John Holden, co-owner of Sportsman's Comfort Products. He continues, "We found out that in the early 1980s, most people had not heard of their lumbar spine!"

What did come out of that experience was their next great idea. At that time turkey hunting vests were an up and coming product advertised as a must have item for all turkey hunters. After checking out the versions of that product available thatl weekend, John and Brent determined that the manufacturers were using inferior quality padding in the cushion which is the most important part of the vest. "The light bulb came on for us at the same time,” said Brent Barker, co-owner of Sportsman's Comfort Products, "the next addition to our company’s line would be a Quality Cushion to outdo all the rest."

By the time early summer of ‘95 had rolled around, two new products had evolved. The original Seatmate and Standmate were ready for their introduction to a roaring crowd of deer hunters throughout the Southeastern USA.

Now, after 16 years of traveling and trade shows covering lots of the eastern half of the USA, the addition of several other amazing products, wives, children and time constraints, HuntingComfort.com  is proud to introduce this new website for your review.
